Baltimore Class Heavy Cruiser Kit

General construction:  The Baltimore was originally built to Treaty rules, but it is also legal in several other formats so check your rules.  The overall length is 56”.  There is 1 7/8” of hard area in the bow, and 1” of hard area in the stern.  There are 22 additional 1/4” ribs spaced at least 2” apart (2.25” center-to-center)  Overall hard area is 8.375”, for a 14.95% fill.  The sub-deck thickness is 1/4”, with an expectation that the builder will add a 1/8” deck for a total deck thickness of 3/8”.  The bottom of the vulnerable window is set at 1” below the waterline (assuming at least 11 pounds displacement) and at the 45 degree turn of the bilge where there is less than one inch available. The rudder area is 3.0 sqin, about 12.5% greater than scale. Check out the manual and plans for more information.

This picture illustrates what a completed ship would look like. The kit does not include the deck, stand,  or the superstructure.  Superstructure plans are available for the builder.

Text Box: This hull kit will build a Baltimore class or Oregon City class heavy cruiser hull, suitable for R/C naval combat under Fast Gun or Treaty rules. The same basic hull was also used for the Saipan class light aircraft carriers (CVL48 Saipan and CVL49 Wright) although it was widened 8ft for the carriers. Depending on your club rules, you may have to modify kit to get the proper beam, or if your beam tolerances are measured at the carrier deck, no modification will be necessary. The kit features laser cut parts for precise fits and accurate shapes. The windows for the vulnerable area are already defined, based on an 11lb displacement, eliminating the need to make complex measurements. The kit includes 24 ribs, a 1/4” sub-deck, a 1/8” bottom deck and the required keels. The builder will need to supply a 1/8” balsa sheeting for the bottom, a 1/8” plywood top deck, superstructure, and all controls and armament. The kit contains the following:

Displacement: 14,472 tons standard, 17,031tons full load
